Purpose Mukbang, an online phenomenon where creators eat large quantities of food while interacting with viewers on online platforms such as YouTube, is significantly associated with eating behavior, especially among adolescents. Adolescents may be especially susceptible to impulsive tendencies and heavy social media use. Sex differences in food preferences may also affect the sex-specific associations between mukbang viewing and eating behaviors; however, these relationships remain unclear. This study examined the associations between mukbang viewing and adolescents’ eating behaviors, focusing on sex differences. Methods: Data from the 18th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey (2022), involving 46,817 adolescents, were analyzed to assess mukbang-viewing frequency and dietary behaviors, including consumption of fast food, sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), and late-night snacks, as well as breakfast skipping. Logistic regression, including an interaction term (Sex × Mukbang viewing frequency), was used to analyze the sex-specific associations between mukbang viewing and dietary behaviors. Results: Mukbang viewing was found to be associated with adolescent dietary behaviors, with sex differences. Boys and girls who frequently watched mukbang had higher odds of consuming fast food, SSBs, and late-night snacks, and were more likely to skip breakfast, compared with non-viewers. However, the odds of late-night snack consumption were not significantly higher among girls who watched mukbang less than three times a month, compared with non-viewers. Conclusion: This study identified sex differences in the associations between watching mukbang and adolescents’ dietary behaviors. The results underscore the importance of identifying factors that reduce mukbang viewing and developing sex-specific strategies to promote healthy eating habits.
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to identify the association between maternal feeding practices and excessive weight gain in infants. METHODS This study adopted a cross-sectional design and included 240 pairs of mothers and their infants (129 boys and 111 girls) in public healthcare centers in the Daejeon area in South Korea. Via multivariate analyses, the association between maternal feeding practices and excessive weight gain in infants was identified. RESULTS Among 240 infants in this study, 39 (16.3%) infants gained excessive weight during 12 months after birth. Using multivariate logistic regression with adjustment for covariates, more than 7 months of exclusive breastfeeding was associated with a reduced likelihood of excessive weight gain in infants during the 12 months after birth (adjusted odds ratio: 0.39, 95% confidence interval: 0.02~0.81, p=.029). CONCLUSION Based on these results, nurses in communities and clinics should educate mothers on the importance of longer durations of exclusive breast feeding and develop strategies for encouraging such behavior. Furthermore, support for exclusive breast feeding should be provided in various settings.

PURPOSE This study aims to investigate the effects of an intervention of self-feeding for elderly residents who were eating with assistance or eating by himself/herself with spilling food. METHODS The Participants were 11 elderly people and 6 formal caregivers from 7 nursing homes in Korea. The intervention was to use the spoon and chopstick sets designed for compensating the weakened eating function. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected through observation, structured questions, and in-depth interviews. RESULTS The mealtime was significantly increased by 3.2 minutes (p=.011) after the intervention. Three themes were extracted for the meaning of self-feeding expressed by the elders; fighting alone for self-feeding, pride of participating in the study, and burden for self-feeding and research participation. Caregivers expressed the meaning of the elder's self-feeding such as the regret of missed chances, facilitating rehabilitation, the increase of the eating pleasure and quality of care, and ambivalence. CONCLUSION Self-feeding has become an opportunity to recognize life values for the elders in nursing homes; for the caregivers, to reconsider caring of the elderly. Posture and eating utensils were also important to improve self-feeding skills.
